Historical Review of Racism in Canada
This module provides an opportunity to learn about and reflect on the historical roots of exclusion, discrimination and inequity, and how these histories continue to shape the experiences of many communities today, including Indigenous Peoples, Black People and Racialized communities. By exploring the past and the present, learners will develop a deeper understanding of how historical patterns influence current systems, interactions and opportunities. Unpacking and acknowledging this history helps foster a culture where all communities are valued, respected and celebrated.
By the end of this module, you will be able to:
- Acknowledge and better understand the history of racism in Canada
- Examine how past injustices continue to influence present‑day experiences, systems and structures
- Reflect on the importance of historical awareness in building more inclusive, respectful and equitable communities

Frequently Asked Questions
Everyone can retake the quiz multiple times and they are granted a Certificate of Completion once they achieve an 80% on the test. The module is also tracked through MyHR. The quiz can be re-taken as many times as needed until successful completion.
The curriculum for this module was carefully developed considering current best practices in teaching and learning in the field of EDI and present research in anti-racism. The Historical Review of Racism in Canada module was also created with the specific context of Western University and the City of London in mind and in consultation with faculty members who are experts in anti-racism, the Office of Indigenous Initiatives, Hillel Western, Western Research, staff, student leaders, and diverse Western student associations.
The Historical Review of Racism in Canada module was reviewed by external experts in anti-racism and EDI-D, faculty members who are also experts in this field, Western leaders, Human Resources, Student Experience, the Office of Indigenous Initiatives, USC, SOGS, SGPS, members of the PMA, UWOSA, UWOFA, and many members of student associations at Western, among others. The module was also piloted with Western Research, WORLDiscoveries, Research Institutes, BrainsCAN, ACVS and faculty. The module was approved by Associate Vice-President EDI Dr. Opiyo Oloya.
