The goal of Western-funded scholarships for Black students is to provide financial support to students with exceptional academic potential from the Black Community. The awarding of scholarships can have a deeper and richer meaning that impacts not only the recipients but the community from where they come.

Naming Western-funded scholarships in honour of Black community leaders who espoused and exemplified excellence in education provides an opportunity to connect Western to the larger community.
