Godwin Arku is a Professor of Geography at Western University. Professor Arku has research expertise in developed and developing countries, having received educational training in both regions. Professor Arku received his Bachelor of Arts in Geography from the University of Ghana. He has a Master’s in Urban/Economic Geography from the University of Toronto and a PhD in Urban Geography from McMaster University. Professor Arku’s research revolves around policy development, implementation, and evaluation concerning cities and their responses to global economic challenges. He is a leading expert in local economic development.
Professor Arku’s research also involves the analysis of geographic and socio-economic factors and their influence on the growth and planning of cities. His research has appeared in several top-ranked journals, such as Urban Studies, International Journal of Urban and Regional Research, Urban Geography, and Cities. He has supervised over 30 graduate students in housing policy, built environment, immigrant integration and policy, and economic development policy. In 2018, Professor Arku was awarded Faculty Scholar by Western University for his scholarly activities. In 2023, he also received Service to Geography from the Canadian Association of Geographers Ontario Division (CAGONT). Professor Arku has participated in writing several global reports, such as the UN-Habitat’s World Cities Reports.
