Black and Indigenous Student Scholarships

President’s Entrance Scholarship for Black Students  

Eligibility: Awarded annually to an outstanding international or domestic secondary school student who self-identifies as Black who is entering year one at Western University.  Based on outstanding academic performance (minimum 90%), a passion for the pursuit of learning, creative and innovative thought, engagement in extra-curricular activities such as the arts and athletics, as well as community service through contributions to school and community life.   

To be considered, students must be nominated by their school and submit an online National Scholarship application including an essay by February 14th. 

Value: Continue for a maximum of four years provided the recipient maintains an 80% average on a full-time status (minimum 3.5 course load) every academic year.  Value: 5 at $20,000 in year 1, $10,000 annually for years 2 to 4, for a total value of $50,000 over four years 

Effective: 2022-2023 academic year. 

Note: Selected candidates will be invited for a National Scholarship Interview in early April.   Scholarship offers will be communicated to selected recipients by the end of April.  

Western Continuing Admission Scholarship of Excellence for Black Students 

Eligibility: Awarded to entering, full-time first-year domestic or international students applying for admission directly from secondary school (or equivalent), based on a competitive admission average as calculated by Western. Students in receipt of a National Scholarship or a Schulich Leader Scholarship are not eligible.  

Value: 30 at $6,000 continuing for up to 4 years, plus $2,000 for optional study abroad experience. This scholarship will continue for up to 4 years provided the recipient maintains an 80% average on a full-time status (minimum 3.5 course load) every academic year. 

Effective: 2022-2023 academic year 

Western Continuing Admission Scholarship of Distinction for Black Students 

Eligibility: Awarded to entering, full-time first-year domestic or international students applying for admission directly from secondary school (or equivalent), based on a competitive admission average as calculated by Western. Students in receipt of a National Scholarship or a Schulich Leader Scholarship are not eligible.   

Value: 10 at $2,500 continuing for up to 4 years, plus $2,000 for optional study abroad experience. This scholarship will continue for up to 4 years provided the recipient maintains an 80% average on a full-time status (minimum 3.5 course load) every academic year. 

Effective: 2022-2023 academic year 

Western University Bursary for Black Students 

Eligibility: Available to full-time and part-time domestic students in any year of an undergraduate program on Western’s main campus who are in financial need and self-identify as Black.  

Value: Number and value will vary 

Effective: 2022-2023 academic year 

Note: An online financial assistance application is available through Student Center. The Office of the Registrar will select the recipients. 

National Indigenous Scholarship Program 

Eligibility: Awarded annually to five incoming Indigenous undergraduate students (First Nations, Métis, and Inuit) studying full-time (minimum 3.5 course load) at Western’s main campus based on promising and overall academic performance. The National Indigenous Scholarship also recognizes the candidate’s creative and innovative thinking, and previous or intended contributions to Indigenous communities, for both on and off reserve. 

Value: 4 awards at $50,000 each to Indigenous students applying from secondary school (or equivalent) ($20,000 for year-one, $10,000 for year’s two to four based on ongoing registration) 

1 award at $50,000 to an Indigenous student applying from a postsecondary institution ($20,000 for year-one, $10,000 for year’s two to four based on ongoing registration)

Western Continuing Admission Scholarship of Excellence for Indigenous Students 

Eligibility: Awarded to entering, full-time first-year students applying for admission directly from secondary school (or equivalent), based on overall academic performance. Students in receipt of a National Scholarship or a Schulich Leader Scholarship are not eligible.
