The Office of EDI hosts a variety of workshops for the Western community. These workshops aim to deepen the awareness within the community to empower them with vital tools to practice allyship and understand the core values of equity, diversity and inclusion at Western.

Learn at Lunch - Workshops for Staff and Faculty

[In-Person] Power and Privilege as Agents of Change - November 21, 2023, 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm

Location will be emailed after registration. Refreshments will be provided.

As social human beings, we can all be agents of change in making Western a more equitable and inclusive place. In this workshop, participants will reflect on how they can use their power and privilege to be agents of change, building welcoming spaces where community members feel a greater sense of belonging. At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

· Reflect on their positionality and how social identities impact their perspective on people, study, and work.

· Examine and implement strategies to use privilege to create more inclusive and brave spaces.

Registration is required as capacity is limited. Attending this workshop will count towards the completion of the EDI Certificate Programs.

[In-Person] Unpacking and Addressing Microaggressions - January 23, 2024, 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm

In this workshop, you will learn about microaggressions, what they are and their impact. We will also unpack microinterventions and practice using tactics to address microaggressions. At the end of this workshop, you will be able to:

· Identify microaggressions.

· Implement strategies to challenge microaggressions.

· Engage in allyship toward equity-deserving group members.

[Virtual] Unpacking Anti-Black Racism - February 7, 2024, 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm

The location will be emailed after registration.

Anti-Black racism in North America is a legacy of not just colonialism but essentially the transatlantic slave trade and the subsequent mistreatment of Black people following the abolition of slavery. Through this workshop, we hope to facilitate learning about anti-Black racism in North America from a contemporary standpoint. The workshop will provide some insight into some common terms related to anti-Black racism, alongside a review of the different ways anti-Black racism has been manifested. Finally, you will also get the opportunity to learn some practical strategies that can be used to address anti-Black racism in your day-to-day lives. At the end of this workshop, you will be able to:

· Define anti-Black racism and related concepts.

· Identify different ways contemporary anti-Black racism has manifested across North America and Canada.

· Explore options to practice allyship and microinterventions to address anti-Black racism.

[In-Person] The Power of using Inclusive Language - March 6, 2024, 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm

Language reflects social constructs, relationships, and powers. Languages are fluid, changing as time and societies shift. Creating inclusive spaces by using the current and most appropriate terminology is essential to conveying the message that we practice allyship and respectful cross-cultural interactions. In this workshop, participants will be able to:

· Identify the guiding principles of inclusive language.

· Examine how and why certain language related to equity, diversity, inclusion, and decolonization has changed.

· Explore examples of language that is presently derogatory and substitute them for language that conveys respect and validation for diversity.
