Historical Review of Racism in Canada

This module provides an opportunity to learn about and reflect on the historical roots of exclusion, discrimination and inequity, and how these histories continue to shape the experiences of many communities today, including Indigenous Peoples, Black People and Racialized communities. By exploring the past and the present, learners will develop a deeper understanding of how historical patterns influence current systems, interactions and opportunities. Unpacking and acknowledging this history helps foster a culture where all communities are valued, respected and celebrated.

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • Acknowledge and better understand the history of racism in Canada
  • Examine how past injustices continue to influence present‑day experiences, systems and structures
  • Reflect on the importance of historical awareness in building more inclusive, respectful and equitable communities
